A STUDY OF RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE AND ADJUSTMENT IN EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL SPHERES AMONG ADOLESCENTS

Abstract

Adolescence is a period of anxiety, a time to adjust with the changes occurring in them during that period, a time to find out the reason for their existence. At this stage, their mind would like to attain the Freedom. The waves of modernization drain their souls, dry out their hearts, damp their spirits, and make their life with a kind of mysteries and maladjustments. Therefore, the developments of spiritual and moral values among the adolescents are being felt increasingly in all spheres of life. The harmonious relationship between adolescents and his or her environment are taken as their social adjustment. Adjustment and Spiritual Intelligence are the two psychological constructs, which scaffold each individual in the modern world to lead a value-oriented and a well-balanced life. The purpose of the research is to find out the relationship between spiritual intelligence and adjustment in educational and social spheres among adolescents with respect to gender, residential background and type of school. For the same purpose, standardized tools namely Spiritual Intelligence Scale (SIS) by Dr. K.S. Misra and Adjustment Inventory for School Students (AISS) by A.K.P. Sinha and R.P. Singh was used. The investigator adopted the Descriptive Survey Method to collect the data. Two hundred students were selected through Random Sampling Technique. In order to analyze the data, statistical techniques namely Mean, Standard deviation and t-Test were employed. The results have shown that that there are significant differences in the spiritual intelligence among adolescents with respect to residential background and type of school, whereas no significant differences have been found on the basis of gender. Further, the result reveals that the students from rural residential background possess higher spiritual intelligence in comparison to adolescents from urban residential background. Also adolescents studying in private schools have higher spiritual intelligence in comparison to adolescents studying in government schools. The result further reveals that there are significant differences in the adjustment among adolescents with respect to gender and type of school, whereas no significant differences have been found on the basis of residential background. Further, male adolescents possess better adjustment in educational area than female adolescents and private school students have better adjustment in the educational and social area in comparison to government school students. There is no significant relationship found between the spiritual intelligence and adjustment in the educational and social spheres among adolescents.
