Abstract: The present study investigates the relationship between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), selfesteem, and coping mechanisms among college students. With the rapid growth of digital technology and increased engagement in online gaming, especially among youth, concerns regarding problematic gaming behaviors have intensified. The study aims to examine how excessive gaming is associated with psychological factors such as self-esteem and coping strategies. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design was employed for the study. A sample of 200 college students from Jammu district was selected using purposive sampling. Standardized tools were used to measure the variables, including the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a coping mechanisms scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, and regression analysis with the help of SPSS. The findings revealed a significant negative relationship between internet gaming disorder and selfesteem, indicating that higher levels of problematic gaming are associated with lower self-worth among students. Additionally, internet gaming disorder showed a significant positive relationship with coping mechanisms, suggesting that individuals may engage in gaming as a way of dealing with stress. However, no significant relationship was found between self-esteem and coping mechanisms. Regression analysis further confirmed that internet gaming disorder significantly predicts both selfesteem and coping behavior, although the explained variance was modest. The study highlights the psychological impact of excessive gaming among college students and underscores the importance of promoting healthy coping strategies and improving self-esteem to reduce the risk of gaming-related problems. The findings contribute to the growing body of research on behavioral addiction and provide practical implications for mental health interventions, educational institutions, and future research in the Indian context.
