dc.description.abstractThe present study attempts to examine the academic stress of adolescents in relation to their self-esteem. The study is quantitative in nature and the sample consists of 240 students of one Rural Tehsil (Bhalwal) and one Urban Tehsil (Jammu) of Jammu District. The sample has been selected through stratified random sampling technique from 2 Private and 2 Government Schools of the Rural Tehsil and 2 Private and 4 Government Schools of the Urban Tehsil located in Jammu District. The main objective of the present research is to study the relationship between academic stress and self-esteem of adolescents. In this study, two standardized tools namely Stress Inventory for School Students (SISS-ss) by Seema Rani and Dr. Basant Bahadur Singh (2011) and Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) by M. S. Prasad and G. P. Thakur (1988) have been used to collect the data from the sample selected for the study. Pearson’s Coefficient of Correlation has been computed for testing the hypotheses and drawing out results. It has been found that there exists a positive, low significant relationship between academic stress and self-esteem of adolescents. There exists a positive, low significant relationship between academic stress and self-esteem among male group as well as among female group of adolescents. However, no significant relationship has been found to exist between academic stress and self-esteem of rural male adolescents. There exists a positive, low significant relationship between academic stress and self-esteem of rural female adolescents. Also, a positive, low significant relationship has been found to exist between academic stress and self-esteem of urban male and female adolescents.en_US
