A STUDY OF THE IMPACT OF TEACHER STUDENT INTERACTION ON STUDENTMOTIVATIONATSECONDARYLEVEL

Abstract

The present study attempts to study the Teacher Student Interactionsandstudent’smotivationat the secondary school level of Jammu city. The tool used for the present study was the Questionnaire of Teacher Interaction (QTI) and Motivated strategy learning questionnaire (MSLQ). The sample consisted of 200 students (both boys and girls) at the secondary school level of Jammu city. The descriptive statistics Mean, Standard deviation, Product moment correlation(r) and t- test has been used. In the study it was observed thattheteachershavequite often exhibited positive behavior in the classrooms. Results show the studentsseetheirteachers as good leaders most of the time and alsohaveratedtheirteachersintermsofexhibitinghelpful and friendly nature, understanding and giving students freedom and responsibility in the classroom. Also, the negative aspects of the teachers seldom exhibit uncertainty, dissatisfaction and admonishing behaviour but they are little strict in academic behaviour. This shows that the teacher student interaction is positive in their classroom. There is a very positive correlation found between their student teacher interactions and motivation. No gender differences have been reported in teacher interpersonal behavior as measured by QTI except the scale of Uncertain. Female students were found to be little uncertain as compared to their male counterparts.
