EXAMINATION ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION PRONENESS AMONG HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

The present study attempts to examine the Examination Anxiety and Depression Proneness among higher secondary school students studying in eleventh class in schools of Jammu city. The study is quantitative in nature and the sample consists of 200 students (100 males and 100 females) have been selected through stratified randomly selected 4 government and 4 private schools (4 schools in urban area & 4 schools in rural area) located in Jammu city. The main objective of the study istofindExaminationanxietyandDepressionPronenessbasedongender, residential background and type of school. Also, significant differences in Rural and Urban students with Examination Anxiety and Depression Proneness as the dependent variables have alsobeenanalyzed.InthisstudytwostandardizedtoolsnamelyExaminationAnxietyscale(EAS) by Subhash Sarkar in (2005) and Depression Scale (DS) by Dr. Shamim Karim and Dr. Rama Tiwari in (1986) have been used. For analyzing the data t-test and Pearson’s Coefficient of Correlation have been employed. Results indicate that there exist no significant difference in Examination Anxiety of Higher Secondary School Students in relation to genderandresidential background but there was significant difference of Examination Anxiety in relation to types of school of Higher Secondary School Students. Likewise, there exist no significant difference is found in Depression Proneness of Higher Secondary School Students in relation to gender difference but there was significant difference in Depression Proneness of higher secondary school students in relation to residential background and types of school. Also, there was significant relationship between Examination Anxiety and Depression Proneness of Higher Secondary School Students indicating thatthehighertheExaminationAnxiety, the higher would be the Depression Proneness of Higher Secondary School Students.
