Title: SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE OF HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS IN RELATION TO SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SAMBA DISTRICT

Abstract: The present study attempts to examine the social intelligence of higher secondary students in relation to their academic achievement and socio economic status. The study is quantitative in nature and sample consists of 250 students of Samba district. The sample has been selected through random sampling technique from 10 higher secondary schools located indifferenttehsi.lsofsambadistrict.Themainobjectiveof the study was to study the relationship between social intelligence, academic achievement and socio economic status of higher secondary students. The tools used forthestudywere1.SocialIntelligenceScale(SES)constructedbyN.K.Chadhaand Usha Ganesen (2002). 2. Socio- economic status scale by S. K. UpadhayayandAlka Saxena. (2008). 3. Performance achievement sheet of previous class was used for determining academic achievement. In the present study,Mean,Correlationandt-test have been computed for testing hypothesis and drawing outresults.Ithasbeenfound that the higher secondary boys and girls do not differ significantly in their social intelligence depending upon their gender. There is no significant difference in social intelligence of higher secondary students in relation to their socio-economic status and there is no significant relationship between social intelligence and academic achievement at higher secondary stage. The present studyisalsointendedtomeasure the SES of students of both rural and urban areas. The scale consists of 31 items in five parts related to 1. Personal information, 2. Family, 3. Education, 4. Income, 5. Others (cultural and material possessions). To analyse the data, the statistical techniques like Mean, Standard Deviation and t- test were employed. The finding of the study revealed that the higher secondary boys and girls donotdiffersignificantly intheirsocialintelligencedependingupontheirsocioeconomicstatus.
